BrandNewsDay Nigeria reports that Northern Elders Forum (NEF), has slammed President Buhari, Rotimi Amechi, and Chris Ngige over their handling of the state of the economy, ASUU strike, and continuous train attack.

According to the Northern Elders Forum said it is regrettable that President Buhari does not care who runs the country in a mess as the economy of the country moves from bad to worse.

Northern Elders said it was displeasing that Labour and Employment Minister, Chris Ngige, is mismanaging the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU crisis which has led the strike to prolonge to four months without any foreseeable resolution.

ASUU Strike Unnecessary, Says JAMB Registrar

The Registrar of Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, yesterday, bemoaned the current strike action embarked on by the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

He however described the ongoing industrial action by members of the unions as unnecessary.

The JAMB registrar said that incessant strike action by unions in the nation’s tertiary institution was capable of causing irreparable damage to not just the students but also to the nation.

Oloyede urged both the government and the unions to find ways of putting an end to the “unnecessary strike action”.

Strike: ASUU to sanction non-complying chapters

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened to query universities that have failed to comply with its decision to remain on strike while negotiations with the Federal Government continue.

BrandNewsDay recalls that ASUU had been on strike for the past five months to press home its demands.

Others are the renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU-FG Agreement and the inconsistency in the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System.

NAN, however, reports that since the union embarked on strike, some of its members have pulled out of the ongoing strike to resume their academic activities.

“We will ensure we query them and we will follow it up the appropriate way. We have even queried some of them in accordance with the union’s rules.”

Government Suspends ASUU, SSANU, NASU, ASUP Over Strike

Government has suspended ASUU, SSANU, NASU, ASUP over ongoing strike.

BrandNewsDay reports that the Edo State Government on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, suspended union activities in all state-owned tertiary institutions of higher learning in the state.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Osarodion Ogie after a State Executive Council meeting in Benin sighted by BrandNewsDay, listed the affected unions as ASUU, Non-Academic Staff of Universities (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and all allied unions in state-owned tertiary institutions.

The statement noted, “By this notice, academic activities are to resume in all state-owned institutions and all cadre of staff are directed to report to their duty posts immediately.

Renegotiation Of 2009 Agreement At Advanced Stage – ASUU

ASUU has revealed that the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with FG is at an advanced stage.

BrandNewsDay reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and the union has reached an advanced stage.

The union encouraged its members to remain focused to the end “of the struggle.”

The union made this known in a memo titled, “Strike bulletin number 6”, signed by its National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, and made available to all branches of the union.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to end the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other university-based unions.

The NLC President, Mr Ayuba Wabba, made the call in his contributions to the report of the Director-General, International Labour Organisation, during the 110th International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland.
