As the Edo State election approaches, following an error on Governor Godwin Obaseki‘s National Youth Service Corps Certificate (NYSC), the commission has issued a new certificate to him.
Brandnewsday reports that NYSC has corrected the long controversial discharge certificate of the incumbent governor of Edo State, it has corrected the error and has issued a new certificate to him. Stating in the programme with the new certificate with number A 004280695 corrected the error.
Obaseki’s name was mistakenly written on the NYSC certificate as ‘OBASEK’ in place of his correct surname, ‘Obaseki’.
Recall that Governor Obaseki was disqualified from contesting under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC) due to an error on his certificates. Also, he was alleged to have involved in some other anti-party activities which led to his disqualification to participate in the APC’s primary election.
The Professor Jonathan Ayuba-led Screening Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Edo state Governorship primary election speaking on why Obaseki was considered ineligible to contest in the party’s primary election because of his misspelt name.
Ayuba statement reads in part: “On the NYSC certificate dated 6th August 1980, the committee observed that he bears the name ‘Obasek’ Godwin.”
“While this may be an error on the part of the issuing authority, we observed however that the aspirant has not taken any step ever to have the anomaly corrected by the issuing authority,” he said.
Recall that as a result of the controversy surrounding his certificate, Obaseki defected from the ruling APC to the main opposition party, People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Despite defecting to PDP, Obaseki emerged as the governorship candidate in the coming September Edo State election.
