Lagos, Nairobi, Cairo Leads African Cities In Traffic Congestion

Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, is among the African cities with the worst traffic congestion problems, BRANDNEWSDAY learnt.

According to a survey published on Friday by Business Insider, Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital city, has the highest traffic index among the seven Dark Continent cities that were evaluated, measuring 348.69.

“The traffic index is the percentage of additional time a road trip takes due to congestion,” the report explained.

Nairobi and Cairo, the capitals of Kenya and Egypt, came in second and third with 256.39 and 244.23, respectively, behind Lagos as other African cities listed in the research.

The other four are cities in South Africa: Pretoria, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Durban, with respective scores of 230.51, 211.92, 201.29, and 121.29.

The survey listed several factors that contribute to traffic congestion in these cities, including “bad road networks, poor driving, and inadequate road management systems.”
