ASUU has revealed that the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement with FG is at an advanced stage.

BrandNewsDay reports that the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement between the Federal Government and the union has reached an advanced stage.

The union encouraged its members to remain focused to the end “of the struggle.”

The union made this known in a memo titled, “Strike bulletin number 6”, signed by its National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, and made available to all branches of the union.

Government Suspends ASUU, SSANU, NASU, ASUP Over Strike

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Osarodion Ogie after a State Executive Council meeting in Benin sighted by BrandNewsDay, listed the affected unions as ASUU, Non-Academic Staff of Universities (NASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU), Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and all allied unions in state-owned tertiary institutions.

The statement noted, “By this notice, academic activities are to resume in all state-owned institutions and all cadre of staff are directed to report to their duty posts immediately.

Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, disclosed this while briefing State House Correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chambers of the presidential villa in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, on Wednesday, June 22, 2022.

Despite four months into the strike already, Ngige assured Nigerians that efforts were underway to resolve the ongoing dispute largely fueled by payment platforms.

ASUU, which grounded academic activities in Nigerian universities since February 14, 2022, had insisted on the use of its own generated payment platform, University Transparency, and Accountability Solution.

National convener of the Northern Elders Forum, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said it was bad that President Buhari and his cabinet members are not disturbed by the problems facing the country.

Northern Elders said it was displeasing that Labour and Employment Minister, Chris Ngige, is mismanaging the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU crisis which has led the strike to prolonge to four months without any foreseeable resolution.

Northern Elders stated that while the university education is shut down as a result of Buhari and Ngige’s lapses, the Ngige is chasing presidential ambition.
