President Muhammadu Buhari has finally broken silence over the ongoing nationwide protests against alleged brutality, inhumane and extortion of citizens by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS).
Brandnewsday had reported that the (#EndSARSNow) protests have been on nationwide over the last 72 hours and have caught the attention of the international community.
Reacting to the development, in a statement late on Friday night, President Buhari authenticated that he had met with the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
The president expressed his determination to reform the Police Force and ensure that officers are fully accountable to Nigerians.
According to him, “the IG already has my firm instructions to conclusively address the concerns of Nigerians regarding these excesses and ensure erring personnel are brought to justice.”
The statement on his verified Twitter page reads in part: ”I appeal for patience and calm, even as Nigerians freely exercise their right to peacefully make their views known.
“The vast majority of men and women of the Nigeria Police Force are patriotic and committed to protecting the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians, and we will continue to support them to do their job”.
On Friday, men of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) disperse peaceful protesters with teargas canisters in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), nation’s capital.
In a similar vein, many videos have emerged on the internet on how some peaceful protesters sustained gun injuries while some were reportedly dead.
Meanwhile, the EndSARSNow and #EndPoliceBrutality have been the number 1 trend on the Nigeria micro-blogging platform, Twitter for about three days respectively. Also, the trend has been the number 1 across the globe; which has drawn global attention to the menace many Nigerian youths are facing in the hands of those to protect them.
