Money Cannot Buy Happiness– World’s Richest Man, Elon Musk Declares

World’s richest man, Elon Musk, on Wednesday reignited debate online after endorsing the long-held belief that wealth does not guarantee happiness.

Brand News Day Nigeria reports that Musk wrote, “Whoever said ‘money can’t buy happiness’ really knew what they were talking about.” The post by the Tesla and SpaceX CEO quickly drew attention, with many interpreting it as a rare glimpse into personal struggles despite his immense fortune.

The remark racked up more than 33 million views and 245,000 likes within hours, triggering a wide discussion on whether financial security truly equates to well-being.

In Nigeria, reactions included comparisons with Afrobeat singer Adekunle Gold’s 2021 song It Is What It Is, in which he sang, “Money no dey bring happiness oh Na when I get money I realise oh.” Like Musk’s post, the song reflects the idea that wealth alone does not ensure fulfilment.

Opinions online were sharply divided. One user agreed with Musk, writing, “Very true, money doesn’t buy happiness, but it makes misery a lot more comfortable!” Others disagreed, stressing the emotional toll of poverty. A popular reply read, “Being broke while watching your mates win will buy you depression, envy, and sleepless nights for free.”

Some questioned Musk’s viewpoint from a position of extreme wealth, with one commenter joking, “Only $1m will make my smile for 20 years straight.” Faith-based reactions also surfaced, including the view that “Money answers all things, but Jesus gives true happiness, fulfillment and satisfaction.”

The debate underscores a familiar divide: whether happiness lies in financial comfort, personal fulfilment, or something beyond money itself.
