TikTok, popular social media platform, has imposed a temporary overnight restriction on its LIVE streaming feature for users in Nigeria, noting an ongoing investigation aimed at strengthening platform safety.
Brand News Day Nigeria reports that around midnight on Sunday, Nigerian users received an in-app system alert titled, “TikTok LIVE Update in Nigeria”, informing them that the platform would “temporarily limit LIVE late at night in Nigeria as part of our investigation to ensure our platform remains safe and our community stays protected.”
Checks revealed on Monday that LIVE streams — which had been available earlier in the evening — were inaccessible between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
Affected accounts displayed a ‘No Access’ warning, and users were unable to host or even watch LIVE broadcasts, including those from outside the country.
Only creators with at least 1,000 followers — the minimum threshold for hosting LIVE sessions — received the notification. Several confirmed that all overnight streaming activities had been halted without prior warning.
Although the suspension disrupted content schedules for Nigerian streamers, particularly those who earn revenue through virtual gifts during late-night sessions, TikTok assured that creators’ balances and previous earnings remained intact.
LIVE access was fully restored by Monday morning, fueling widespread discussion online as users speculated about the reasons behind the nationwide restriction.
The blackout occurred during peak streaming hours for Nigerian creators, who typically attract their largest audiences through entertainment segments, match-watch sessions, trends, and interactive broadcasts conducted at night.
The development also follows TikTok’s recent release of updated safety data for West Africa, suggesting the restrictions may be tied to broader regional enforcement measures.
