The Academic Staff Organization of Universities (ASUU) will meet with the federal government today to begin negotiations about the ongoing university teachers’ strike, according to Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, national president of the union.
Osodeke revealed this while participating in a political discussion on the Channels Television program Politics Today monitored by BRANDNEWSDAY.
The ASUU president stated that if the Federal Government acceded to the union’s requests in today’s meeting, the union would be willing to end the strike.
“If we go into that meeting tomorrow and the government says, what you have bargained for, we are willing to sign, the strike will be called off,” he said.

Recall that since the end of the renegotiation meeting led by Prof. Nimi Briggs, the government has yet to broker a truce with ASUU.
After the Briggs committee submitted its findings on ASUU, the president gave the minister of education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, a two-week deadline to respond to the union’s requests.
Osodeke claimed that under the pretense of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system, the government engaged in fraudulent operations by using the university unions.

He said, “We have been shouting all along that IPPIS is a fraud, we have told them that for 16 years they siphoned our money with IPPIS, they punished our members because of it. Now, they know, some foreign bodies forced it on the people.’’
ASUU went on strike on February 14, 2022, following the failure of the federal government to meet some of its demands.
One of the demands is for the release of funds for university revitalization, as well as the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement, the release of earned allowances for university lecturers, and the implementation of the UTAS payment platform for the payment of university lecturers’ salaries and allowances.
