How to Create, Join, and Use Twitter Spaces

Last year Twitter introduced Spaces: live audio conversations on Twitter. Since then, the tech giant has been building and testing with a limited group and have found that hearing people’s voices bring conversations on Twitter Space to life in a completely new way.

How Spaces work

On Twitter for iOS and Android, when someone you follow starts or speaks in a Space, it’ll appear at the top of your timeline as a purple bubble for as long as it’s live. When you join a Space as a listener, you can react to what you hear with emojis, check out any pinned Tweets, follow along with captions, Tweet or DM Space, or request to speak.

When you join Space as a speaker, in addition to talking, you can pin Tweets to the Space, turn on captions so everyone can follow along with what you’re saying, and Tweet Space so your followers can join.

When you create a Space, you’re in control – who’s speaking, the topics, and the vibe. Invite people to join by Tweeting or DM’ing them to jump in and then invite them to speak directly from your Space. From there, talk about whatever is happening in your world.

It’s important that people feel safe hosting and participating in Spaces conversations – that’s why safety controls are available to hosts and speakers. For example, as a host, you can mute speakers and take away their mic, or remove them from the Space completely. Recently, the ability for Hosts to mute all speakers at the same time and a new management page for easier hosting.

Anyone can report and block others in the Space or report the Space. Also, people you’ve blocked can’t join a Space you’re hosting, and you’ll see labels and warnings if someone you’ve blocked is speaking in a Space you join.

How Do You Create Spaces on Twitter?

  1. From your iPhone or iPad, launch Twitter.
  2. To expand your icons, long-press the new tweet button; a feather with a plus sign found at the bottom right-hand corner.
  3. A new space can also be started by tapping on your Fleet at the top left-hand corner, scrolling to the right then selecting “Spaces.”
  4. Tap on the icon of the new space, (the diamond made of circles) to create a new space.
  5. Because all spaces are public, anyone can join your space as a listener even if they don’t follow you.
  6. When choosing who can speak in your space, it can be Everyone who joins, only the people you follow or only people you invite to speak. People who you don’t permit to speak initially will need to request permission for you to approve or decline.
  7. There is no limit to the number of listeners in a space; up to 11 (including the host) can speak at once.
  8. To make your space and microphone active, tap on “Start your Space.”
  9. To allow someone to speak, tap on their photo, then switch their “Allow mic access” to “On.”
  10. To view speaking requests, at the bottom right, tap on the “Requests” button.
  11. To share your space, open the sharing menu, tap on the sharing icon found at the bottom of the screen. This will allow you to share the link to your space via a tweet or DM.
